Packaging is part of the delivered food experience. A container has to fit the portion, tolerate the food temperature, travel without leakage, stack safely, and remain practical for kitchen staff. Selecting only by unit price can create higher costs through spills, damaged orders, excessive packing time, or unused sizes.

Match the container to the food

Start with portion volume, shape, moisture, oil content, and serving temperature. Hot gravies, chilled desserts, bakery items, dry snacks, and beverages place different demands on seals and materials. Test the lid and base together; similar-looking components are not always interchangeable.

Allow enough headspace for transport without using a container so large that the portion moves excessively. For compartment containers, test the actual menu combination to confirm that sauces and sides remain separated during normal handling.

Test the complete delivery journey

Pack a normal order, hold it for the expected dispatch time, and transport it in the same bags or crates used by the outlet. Check for lid movement, condensation, softening, leakage, crushing, and label adhesion. A short kitchen test may miss problems that appear after stacking or riding in a delivery vehicle.

Consider the customer's opening experience as well. Tamper-evident components should be clear to use, and closures should be secure without making the package unnecessarily difficult to open.

Standardise sizes and calculate true cost

A smaller, well-planned range of container sizes can simplify storage, staff training, and reordering. Document which menu items use each pack, lid, liner, label, and bag. This also makes substitutions easier to control when a regular item is unavailable.

Calculate packaging cost per completed order, including lids, liners, cutlery, labels, seals, and carry bags. Include the cost of failures during trials. Quantity pricing is useful only when the outlet can consume the stock without damage, contamination, or excessive storage pressure.
